Rules that are implemented by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) require employees who are in hazardous areas to wear the proper safety work gear. For example, in those areas where there is a possibility of a heavy object falling on the head of a worker, such as in outdoors construction areas, a hard hat must be worn. This may also be required in those situations where people have to work in tight spaces to repair electronic equipment and there is a possibility of hitting their heads upon something hard. Sometimes, workers are reluctant to wear the proper work gear because of discomfort but it is the responsibility of the employer to make sure that employees will abide by the rules.
A common alibi presented by workers when they are not wearing proper work gear is that they are heavy, hot and uncomfortable. Luckily, new materials and designs have been developed to solve these problems. Hard hats are no longer constructed from heavy metal but are made from very strong plastic materials. Safety boots are no longer heavy and hot such that the feet tend to become sweaty. Even when working with industrial equipment or agricultural equipment, these types of safety boots remain comfortable and cool for the workers.
In addition, safety clothing must be provided when the workers have to perform their duties outdoors. During those times when the environment is extremely cold, jackets can be worn to protect people and prevent hypothermia. And when the workers have to toil under the rain, Goretex coats are very helpful because they are made from waterproof materials. For those who have to stay on the road, such as highway construction workers, reflective and waterproof clothing have to be worn.
Employers have to remember that they are responsible for workers’ compliance with the law on the wearing of work gear that are designed for safety. If their employees are found to be in violation of these rules, employers could be fined. And if injury or death is the result of this failure to comply, the company may be the subject of a lawsuit. Even in those situations where the worker is the one responsible for getting his own safety clothing, the company has to make sure that the appropriate gear have been purchased and that they are being worn properly.
For example, gloves must be worn to serve as protection for the forearms and the hands when the employee has to handle dangerous materials and chemicals. Gloves may also be required for those kinds of jobs where the worker might get electrocuted from wires, such as the work of a lineman. And for those who have to be on their knees in the course of their work, gloves, knee pads and protection for the elbows are essential.
Always ensure that your workers have and are wearing the proper protective work gear. Not doing so could result in grievous injuries and even the loss of life, and in many instances the employer could be held responsible.
