The asphalt milling machine has made structural repairs to parking lots, roads, and driveways faster and less costly than the traditional methods of the 1980’s and 1990’s which utilized excavating machines or backhoes. The asphalt milling machine grinds the cracked or fractured asphalt surface down to a predetermined depth, the material is loaded automatically onto a conveyer, and discharged into a dump truck-all in one step. The dump truck can then easily haul the material to the local asphalt plant for recycling or the material can even be used under certain conditions as fill.
The asphalt milling process is much more convenient to the public as roads, driveways, and lots are many times still drivable while the milling operation is underway depending on the degree of repairs. The old excavator method often times involved removing the asphalt in deep “chunks” and required expensive saw cutting around broken patches with diamond tip blades which were time consuming. Using a modern day asphalt milling machine allows the contractor to efficiently remove all or part of the asphalt material in an easy and affordable way.
Asphalt milling machines are also used to reprofile roads so that water drainage can be controlled, thus maximizing the longevity of the pavement. Instead of simply “resurfacing” a roadway with 1.5″-2″ of new material on top of the old to cover up cracking, the cracks should be milled out first, then the new surface Applies. In this new surface, which can occur at the time and reflection cracking asphalt repair is a more cost-effective solution.
